It is shown here that electrons on the surface of a nanotube in a perpendicular magnetic field undergo spin-chirality separation along the circumference. Stripes of spin-polarization propagate along the tube, with a spatial pattern that can be modulated by the electron filling.

We give a new proof of Gromov's theorem that any finitely generated group of polynomial growth has a finite index nilpotent subgroup. Unlike the original proof, it does not rely on the Montgomery-Zippin-Yamabe structure theory of locally compact groups.

Certain results on representations of quivers have analogs in the structure theory of general Coxeter groups. A fixed Coxeter element turns the Coxeter graph into an acyclic quiver, allowing for the definition of a preprojective root. A positive root is an analog of an indecomposable representation of the quiver. The Coxeter group is finite if and only if every positive root is preprojective, which is analogous to the well-known result that a quiver is of finite representation type if and only...

A three-dimensional closed orientable orbifold (with no bad suborbifolds) is known to have a geometric decomposition from work of Perelman along with earlier work of Boileau-Leeb-Porti and Cooper-Hodgson-Kerckhoff. We give a new, logically independent, unified proof of the geometrization of orbifolds, using Ricci flow. Along the way we develop some tools for the geometry of orbifolds that may be of independent interest.

We prove that a 3-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold which is locally collapsed, with respect to a lower curvature bound, is a graph manifold. This theorem was stated by Perelman and was used in his proof of the geometrization conjecture.

We give sufficient conditions for a metric space to bilipschitz embed in L_1. In particular, if X is a length space and there is a Lipschitz map u:X--->R such that for every interval I in R, the connected components of the inverse image f^{-1}(I) have diameter at most a constant time the diameter of I, then X admits a bilipschitz embedding in L_1. As a corollary, well-known examples of Laakso bilipschitz embed in L_1, though they do not embed in any any Banach space with the Radon-Nikodym...

If a torsion-free hyperbolic group G has 1-dimensional boundary, then the boundary is a Menger curve or a Sierpinski carpet provided G does not split over a cyclic group. When the boundary of G is a Sierpinski carpet we show that G is a quasi-convex subgroup of a 3-dimensional hyperbolic Poincare duality group. We also construct a ``topologically rigid'' hyperbolic group G: any homeomorphism of the boundary of G is induced by an element of G.

Causal variational principles, which are the analytic core of the physical theory of causal fermion systems, are found to have an underlying Hamiltonian structure, giving a formulation of the dynamics in terms of physical fields in space-time. After generalizing causal variational principles to a class of lower semi-continuous Lagrangians on a smooth, possibly non-compact manifold, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations are derived. In the first part, it is shown under additional smoothness...

The curvature effects in carbon nanotubes are studied analytically as a function of chirality. The pi-orbitals are found to be significantly rehybridized in all tubes, so that they are never normal to the tubes' surface. This results in a curvature induced gap in the electronic band-structure, which turns out to be larger than previous estimates. The tilting of the pi-orbitals should be observable by atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.

We study discrete group actions on coarse Poincare duality spaces, e.g. acyclic simplicial complexes which admit free cocompact group actions by Poincare duality groups. When G is an (n-1) dimensional duality group and X is a coarse Poincare duality space of formal dimension n, then a free simplicial action of G on X determines a collection of ``peripheral'' subgroups F_1,...,F_k in G so that the group pair (G;F_1,...,F_k) is an n-dimensional Poincare duality pair. In particular, if G is a...

We give a new proof for the existence of mean curvature flow with surgery of 2-convex hypersurfaces in $R^N$, as announced in arXiv:1304.0926. Our proof works for all $N \geq 3$, including mean convex surfaces in $R^3$. We also derive a priori estimates for a more general class of flows in a local and flexible setting.

We present and analyze a joint source-channel coding strategy for the transmission of a Gaussian source across a Gaussian channel in n channel uses per source symbol. Among all such strategies, our scheme has the following properties: i) the resulting mean-squared error scales optimally with the signal-to-noise ratio, and ii) the scheme is easy to implement and the incurred delay is minimal, in the sense that a single source symbol is encoded at a time.

This is one of a series of papers examining the interplay between differentiation theory for Lipschitz maps, X-->V, and bi-Lipschitz nonembeddability, where X is a metric measure space and V is a Banach space. Here, we consider the case V=L^1 where differentiability fails. We establish another kind of differentiability for certain X, including R^n and H, the Heisenberg group with its Carnot-Cartheodory metric. It follows that H does not bi-Lipschitz embed into L^1, as conjectured by J. Lee...
